A room can look clean after a quick wipe and mop while dust, grime and moisture build up in places nobody checks. These are the spots most often missed in homes and offices, and how to deal with each one.
Skirting boards and door frames
Skirting boards sit below eye level and collect dust, hair and mop splashes. Door frames and the tops of doors gather dust you only notice when you run a finger along them.
Vacuum skirting boards with a brush attachment, then wipe them with a damp microfibre cloth. In bathrooms, kitchens and rooms near windows or aircon units, check for black spots that could be mould, and dry the area after cleaning.
Ceiling corners, fans and lights
Cobwebs form in ceiling corners and above wardrobes. Ceiling fan blades build up a layer of dust that is thrown around the room when the fan starts.
- Switch the fan off and wait until it stops completely.
- Slide an old pillowcase over each blade and pull it back, so the dust falls into the pillowcase instead of onto the floor.
- Use an extendable duster for corners and light fittings.
- Stand on a stable step stool, never on a chair or table.
Aircon louvres and vents
The louvres and front panels of wall-mounted aircon units collect dust and can develop black spots in our humid climate. With the unit switched off, wipe the front panel and louvres with a damp cloth. Wash the filters as the manual describes. Anything inside the unit, such as the coil or fan, is a job for an aircon technician.
Switches, handles and remotes
Light switches, door handles, cabinet pulls, remote controls and fridge handles are touched many times a day but rarely cleaned. Wipe them weekly with a cloth dampened in soapy water, or with a disinfectant wipe used as the label directs. Spray onto the cloth, never into switches or electronics.
In offices, add shared keyboards, desk phones, pantry taps, microwave and fridge handles, and meeting room tables.
Upholstery, carpets and curtains
Fabric holds dust and smells. Vacuum sofas, cushions and carpets with an upholstery tool, including under the seat cushions. Spot-clean marks quickly with a damp cloth. Wash or vacuum curtains every few months, because they collect dust from open windows. For deep stains or a full shampoo, check what a specialist upholstery or carpet cleaner offers.
Drawers, cabinets and wardrobes
Crumbs collect in kitchen drawers and under shelf liners. Wardrobes can smell musty in Singapore’s humidity, especially those against outside walls.
- Empty one drawer or shelf at a time.
- Vacuum crumbs and dust from the corners.
- Wipe with a damp cloth, then dry thoroughly.
- Put back only what you use, and leave space for air to move.
Moisture absorbers in wardrobes, and a little space between hangers, help keep mould off leather bags and shoes.
Behind and under furniture
Dust collects behind the sofa, under beds and behind the fridge and washing machine. Crumbs and food scraps in these spots can attract cockroaches and ants. Move lighter furniture every few months to vacuum and mop underneath, and use a long, flat duster under heavy pieces.
Places where water collects
Some missed spots matter for dengue prevention as well as cleanliness. NEA’s mosquito-prevention steps include emptying water from flower pot plates, changing the water in vases, turning over pails and keeping roof gutters clear. Also check:
- floor traps and drains, which collect hair and soap scum
- the base of the toilet and the floor behind it
- the cabinet under the kitchen sink
- dish racks and their drip trays
Office spots that get missed
- under desks, where dust and cables collect
- pantry fridges, with forgotten food and spills
- window blinds and the tops of partitions and cupboards
- printer and copier exteriors
- bins, including the inside of the bin itself
The office cleaning checklist covers these by area and frequency.
A simple rotation
You do not need to tackle everything in one day. Add one or two of these areas to each weekly clean, so every spot gets attention at least once a month. Our home cleaning checklist builds this into a daily, weekly and monthly routine. Save the larger jobs, such as moving furniture and washing curtains, for a quarterly clean.
When you want everything done in one go, before a festival, a visit or a move, our spring cleaning service covers dusting, vacuuming, mopping, kitchens, bathrooms, reachable high and low areas and furniture surfaces, with the checklist confirmed in the quote.
