A home cleaning checklist for busy households

A realistic home cleaning checklist for Singapore homes, split into daily resets, weekly essentials and a monthly rotation you can keep up with.

A realistic cleaning routine does not ask you to clean every room every day. It separates quick daily resets from weekly essentials and monthly detail work, so nothing turns into one exhausting weekend project.

This structure works for HDB flats, condominiums and landed homes alike. Adjust it for how often you cook, whether you have children or pets, and how much time you really have.

The checklist at a glance

How often Goal Priorities
Daily Stop small messes building up Dishes, food spills, rubbish, wet bathroom floors, visible floor dirt
Weekly Reset the main rooms Kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, living areas, high-touch points, floors
Monthly Reach easy-to-miss areas Window tracks, cabinet fronts, skirting boards, fans, appliance seals
As needed Deal with a specific problem Built-up grease, stubborn bathroom residue, guests, a neglected home

Kitchens and bathrooms usually need the most attention. Cabinet interiors, window tracks and high shelves can move into the monthly rotation.

The “as needed” row is where outside help often makes sense: a deep clean resets a neglected home, and spring cleaning gets it ready for guests or a festival.

If several people share the home, give each person ownership of specific tasks rather than leaving one person to manage the whole list.

A short daily reset

The daily reset contains mess. It is not a full cleaning session.

  • Wash dishes or load the dishwasher.
  • Clear food scraps and wipe preparation surfaces and the dining table.
  • Wipe fresh cooking splashes before they harden.
  • Empty food-waste bins before they smell or overflow.
  • Put laundry in one collection basket.
  • Dry obvious water around the sink and shower area.
  • Clear hair from reachable drain covers.
  • Sweep or vacuum visible crumbs.
  • Keep walkways clear of bags, toys and cables.

On a very busy day, prioritise food mess, rubbish, wet floors and trip hazards. Dust can wait longer than food residue left out overnight, which draws ants and cockroaches quickly in Singapore’s warm climate.

Weekly kitchen tasks

  • Clear and wipe countertops and the backsplash.
  • Clean the sink, tap and surrounding edges.
  • Wipe the stove once it has cooled.
  • Wipe cabinet handles and appliance exteriors.
  • Check the fridge for expired or spoiled food.
  • Clean the bin lid and the floor around it.
  • Vacuum or sweep, then mop, and let the floor dry.

For a fuller sequence, see the kitchen cleaning checklist.

Weekly bathroom tasks

  • Toilet seat, lid, bowl, exterior and base.
  • Flush button and door handle.
  • Sink, tap, counter and mirror.
  • Shower screen or curtain and soap residue on walls.
  • Hair and debris on floor traps and drain covers.
  • Floor corners and behind the door, finishing at the toilet.

Use separate cloths for the toilet and for cleaner surfaces. Open the window or run the exhaust fan, and leave the floor as dry as possible afterwards.

Weekly living room and bedrooms

  • Put away visible clutter.
  • Dust shelves, tables, the TV console and bedside tables.
  • Wipe light switches, door handles and remote controls.
  • Vacuum sofa cushions if the fabric allows it.
  • Change bedding.
  • Dust before cleaning the floor, never after.

Do not move heavy beds, wardrobes or sofas on your own. A dusty corner is not worth a back injury.

A monthly rotation

Pick two or three of these each month instead of doing them all at once:

  • Ceiling fans, only where safely reachable with a stable step stool.
  • Skirting boards in one or two rooms.
  • Window sills and reachable window tracks.
  • Cabinet fronts and one shelf or drawer zone.
  • Fridge and washing machine door seals.
  • Curtains, vacuumed or washed if the care label allows.
  • Balcony or service yard.
  • Damp corners, checked for recurring stains or mould.
  • One area sorted into keep, donate, recycle or discard (see how to declutter your home).

If a task keeps getting postponed, make it smaller. Clean one set of window tracks rather than waiting for time to do all of them.

The minimum for an overloaded week

  1. Remove food waste and overflowing rubbish.
  2. Clear dishes and wipe food-preparation surfaces.
  3. Clean the toilet and most-used bathroom surfaces.
  4. Clear floor dirt from the main walkways.
  5. Put laundry and clutter into holding areas.

That is a reset, not a failure. Return to the weekly list when time allows.

Work in a sensible order

  1. Clear rubbish and put private items away.
  2. Dust higher surfaces before lower ones.
  3. Clean the kitchen and bathrooms with separate cloths.
  4. Wipe furniture and high-touch points.
  5. Vacuum or sweep, then mop towards the exit.
  6. Wash cloths and store products safely.

Use cleaning products safely

  • Read the label and check the product suits the surface.
  • Never mix products. Bleach combined with ammonia or acid-based cleaners releases toxic gas.
  • Ventilate the room and wear gloves when using strong cleaners.
  • Spray onto a cloth, not directly at electronics or sockets.
  • Keep products in their original containers, away from children and pets.

Only clean windows and fans you can reach safely. Never lean out of a window or stand on a chair to reach a high spot. For more on safe use, see cleaning products you should never mix.

Before a cleaner arrives

Secure valuables, keys and documents. Clear personal items from the surfaces you want cleaned, point out delicate materials, and list the rooms that matter most. For KleanSG’s regular home cleaning and part-time cleaner visits, you provide the cleaning products and equipment. For deep cleaning, KleanSG brings equipment, supplies and chemicals for the agreed scope.

If routine upkeep is hard to fit around work and family, KleanSG’s regular home cleaning offers weekly, fortnightly, monthly or one-time sessions on weekdays and Saturdays. If you would rather have the same cleaner each week for chores such as laundry and ironing, see our part-time cleaner service. Share your home type, number of rooms and bathrooms, current condition and the tasks that matter most so the team can suggest a suitable arrangement.
