Kitchen cleaning checklist for Singapore homes

A practical kitchen cleaning checklist for Singapore homes, with daily, weekly and monthly tasks for grease, sinks, handles, floors and hidden spots.

Cooking, food preparation, washing up and rubbish all share the same space, so a kitchen can look tidy while grease, crumbs and water marks build up around handles, sink edges, appliances and floor corners. This checklist gives Singapore households a daily, weekly and monthly routine that covers more than the countertop.

Kitchen cleaning at a glance

  • Daily: remove food residue, wipe frequently used surfaces and clear rubbish.
  • Weekly: clean the stove area, backsplash, handles, appliance exteriors, sink edges and floor.
  • Monthly: check cabinet doors, selected cabinet interiors, hidden corners and grease build-up.
  • As needed: arrange deeper help when sticky grease, long-term build-up or difficult access makes routine cleaning insufficient.

How often you need each task depends on how much you cook, how much frying or heavy cooking you do, how many people live in the home and the current condition of the kitchen.

Before you start

  • Let hot surfaces cool.
  • Read each product label and confirm it suits the surface.
  • Do not mix cleaning products.
  • Ventilate and use protective equipment where the label requires it.
  • Keep food and utensils away from spray, and rinse food-contact surfaces if the label says so.
  • Do not move heavy appliances, disturb gas or electrical connections, or clean inside an appliance unless the manufacturer says it is safe.
  • Work only on areas you can reach safely.

NEA advises checking labels, following product instructions, not mixing disinfectants and using them in a well-ventilated area. Routine kitchen cleaning does not automatically need disinfection. See our guide to cleaning products you should never mix.

Daily checklist

  • Wash dishes or load the dishwasher.
  • Wipe countertops after food preparation.
  • Wipe the stove after cooking, once it is safe to touch.
  • Clean visible spills promptly.
  • Rinse the sink and remove food bits.
  • Empty the rubbish bin when needed.
  • Sweep or vacuum visible crumbs.
  • Keep cloths and sponges clean and dry where practical.
  • Wipe the dining or breakfast counter after use.

Weekly checklist

  • Wipe backsplash tiles or wall panels near the stove.
  • Clean cabinet and drawer handles.
  • Clean suitable appliance exteriors.
  • Wipe fridge and microwave handles.
  • Clean the microwave interior if needed and safe.
  • Scrub sink edges and the tap area with a suitable product.
  • Clean the dish rack or drying area.
  • Mop the kitchen floor.
  • Clean the rubbish-bin area.
  • Check pantry and food-storage areas for spills.

Households that cook often may need some weekly tasks every day.

Monthly checklist

  • Wipe cabinet doors.
  • Clean selected cabinet or drawer interiors after emptying them.
  • Check beneath small, light appliances, only if they can be moved without disturbing electrical or gas connections.
  • Clean reachable window tracks or ledges near the kitchen.
  • Clear out expired food.
  • Clean deeper floor corners and cabinet-base edges.
  • Check for grease build-up around the stove and hood exterior.
  • Wash or replace cleaning cloths and worn sponges.
  • Note any persistent stain, leak, odour or damaged surface that needs separate attention.

Do not move heavy fixed appliances or reach into electrical areas just to finish a checklist.

Grease-prone areas

Cooking vapour and splashes settle well beyond the pan. Check:

  • stove top
  • backsplash
  • cooker-hood exterior
  • cabinet doors near the stove
  • countertop corners
  • wall area beside the cooking zone
  • appliance surfaces near the cooking area
  • handles touched while cooking

Use a product suited to the surface and avoid strong or abrasive products on delicate materials unless the manufacturer allows them. Test on a hidden spot where appropriate. Our guide on how to clean kitchen grease covers fresh, sticky and baked-on grease, area by area.

Sink and drain area

  • sink basin
  • tap base
  • drain cover
  • edges and sealant around the sink
  • dish rack area
  • sponge or cloth storage

Keep grease and solid food out of the drain. Let used oil cool, collect it in a container instead of pouring it away, and use a sink strainer for scraps. If a blockage persists, do not combine drain cleaners; get plumbing help.

Handles and touchpoints

  • cabinet handles
  • drawer handles
  • fridge handle
  • microwave handle
  • light switches near the kitchen, where suitable
  • rubbish-bin lid or pedal

Use a lightly damp cloth around switches and never spray liquid into electrical fittings.

Floor corners and hidden spots

  • floor beside the sink
  • corners beside cabinets
  • around the rubbish bin
  • under movable racks or trolleys
  • floor edges along the cabinet base

Sweep or vacuum before mopping. Mopping over crumbs and dry dirt spreads residue.

A simple cleaning order

  1. Clear rubbish, dishes and loose items.
  2. Read product labels and prepare suitable tools.
  3. Wipe safe higher surfaces first.
  4. Clean the stove and backsplash.
  5. Clean countertops.
  6. Clean the sink and tap area.
  7. Clean cabinet handles and touchpoints.
  8. Sweep or vacuum the floor.
  9. Mop the floor last.

Common mistakes

  • cleaning only the visible countertop
  • forgetting cabinet and appliance handles
  • leaving grease to build up for weeks
  • using too much product and leaving residue
  • mixing cleaning products
  • not checking whether a product suits the surface
  • ignoring the sink and drain cover
  • mopping before removing dry dirt
  • moving heavy appliances without safe access or help

When to book a deeper clean

Consider more detailed help when:

  • grease has built up around the stove or backsplash
  • cabinet exteriors feel sticky
  • the kitchen has not been cleaned in detail for a long time
  • you are moving in or out
  • you are preparing for guests or a new occupant
  • routine cleaning no longer feels enough

Not every grease mark or stain can be removed; results depend on the surface and how long the residue has been there, so send clear photos before booking. KleanSG’s quote-based deep cleaning provides equipment, supplies and chemicals for the agreed scope; appliance interiors, high areas, heavy grease, specialist stains and areas behind fixed items need separate discussion. For regular upkeep, see regular home cleaning, or a part-time cleaner if you also want help with chores such as washing dishes. Restaurants, cafes and central kitchens have different requirements, covered by our commercial kitchen cleaning service.
