Accidents happen, especially with puppies, older dogs and dogs settling into a new home. The sooner you deal with a urine stain, the easier it is to remove, and the less likely your dog is to use the same spot again.
Why the smell lingers
As urine dries, bacteria break down urea into ammonia, which causes the sharp smell. Urine also leaves uric acid crystals that do not dissolve easily in water, so a quick wipe can leave the odour behind even when the stain looks gone. Dogs can smell it long after you can, which is why they return to the same spot.
Enzyme cleaners made for pet urine break down these residues instead of masking them. They are the most reliable choice for carpets, rugs and upholstery.
What you need
- Paper towels or clean white cloths
- Enzyme cleaner for pet urine
- White vinegar and water mixed in equal parts, as a backup
- Baking soda
- Spray bottle and a bowl of cool water
- Vacuum cleaner
Fresh urine on carpets and rugs
- Blot straight away. Press paper towels firmly into the wet patch and replace them until they come up almost dry. Do not rub, which spreads urine into more fibres.
- Rinse with cool water. Dampen the area lightly and blot again to dilute what is left.
- Apply the cleaner. Spray enzyme cleaner over the whole stain and a little beyond its edges, since urine spreads wider underneath than it looks on top. Use enough to reach as deep as the urine went, without flooding the carpet.
- Let it work. Leave it for the time on the label, often 10 to 15 minutes or longer. Some products work best if left to dry naturally.
- Blot and rinse. Blot up the cleaner, dab with a clean damp cloth, then blot again.
- Deodorise. When the area is nearly dry, sprinkle baking soda over it. Leave it for several hours or overnight, then vacuum.
- Repeat if needed. Older or larger stains often need two or three rounds.
If you use the vinegar and water mix instead, follow the same steps, and test it on a hidden area first.
Sofas, mattresses and fabric
Check the care label first. Use the same blot, clean and rinse method, but apply the cleaner to a cloth rather than spraying it on directly, so the cushion foam does not soak through. Dry with a fan. For removable covers, rinse in cold water and wash according to the label. Our step-by-step guides to cleaning a sofa and cleaning a mattress cover care codes and drying in more detail.
Tiles, vinyl and timber floors
Wipe up the urine, mop with a neutral floor cleaner, then dry the area.
- Tiles: grout is porous and holds odour. Scrub the grout lines with a brush and cleaner, then rinse.
- Timber and laminate: dry the spot quickly. Liquid left on the joins can seep in, stain or swell the boards.
- Marble and natural stone: avoid vinegar and other acidic cleaners, which can etch the surface. Use a pH-neutral cleaner.
What to avoid
- Ammonia-based cleaners. They smell similar to urine and can draw your dog back to the spot.
- Heat on fresh stains. Steam cleaners, hot water and hairdryers can set the stain and odour in carpet and fabric.
- Mixing products. Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia or other cleaners, because it can release harmful gases.
- Overwetting. Soaked carpet and underlay dry slowly in Singapore’s humidity and can turn musty or mouldy.
Finding old stains
If a room smells but you cannot see the stain, switch off the lights and use a UV torch. Dried urine usually shows up as a glowing patch. Mark each spot and treat it with enzyme cleaner.
Preventing repeat accidents
- Keep a regular routine for walks and toilet breaks, especially after meals, naps and play.
- Reward your dog for going in the right place.
- Use pee pads or a set toilet area for puppies and older dogs, and clean it often.
- Clean every accident thoroughly so no scent is left to mark the spot.
- If a toilet-trained dog suddenly starts having accidents, speak to a vet, since it can be a sign of a health problem.
Prompt action, the right cleaner and thorough rinsing do most of the work. If urine has soaked into several areas, or the smell lingers across the home, our deep cleaning service covers floors, living areas and other surfaces within an agreed scope. Sofa, mattress and upholstery cleaning are not listed services, and heavy stain removal is not part of deep cleaning. Send photos first and the team can tell you what fits the scope.
